Melanie Fulton is an Adelaide-based visual artist, a graduate of the South Australian School of Art, Underdale, Uni SA. She has maintained a studio practice since graduating, and at the same time has participated extensively in the paid work-force, usually but not exclusively in arts related occupations. Fulton has also raised her three children, and considers the different aspects of her life to overlap and be inter-related, each informing and enriching the others. Her experience of growing up in Papua New Guinea has resonated throughout her artwork, and has contributed significantly to her themes around place and psyche; natural forms and created environs; time and memory; sanctuary and transience.
Fulton’s practice has centered on drawing and painting, and more recently on collage, paper-cuts and assemblage. She has participated in select exhibitions and events since graduation, and has work in collections in Australia and overseas. Fulton has curated numerous exhibitions, many in her role as Visual Arts Coordinator for Tutti Inc, South Australia’s leading multi-arts organization for young adults with intellectual disability. She curated the large Tutti / Minda partnership project Their Shadows in Us exhibition at the Flinders University City Gallery in 2013 to 2014. She and John Foubister co-curated and exhibited in Rimbun Dahan: Cultivating the Garden, a 2013 Oz Asia Festival exhibition held at Light Square Gallery, Adelaide. This exhibition celebrated the Malaysian residency program which Fulton had been a participant of, in George Town Malaysia 2011.
